His Eminence Cardinal Peter Turkson
Prefect
Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development

His Holiness Pope Francis was pleased to learn of the conference, to be held on 7 April 2017, which has been organized by the Embassy of Hungary to the Holy See, reflecting on the integration of the Roma people in the broader European community. His Holiness encourages those gathered to consider the many ways that the Roma community is excluded from participating in and benefitting from society, so that solutions may be found to overcoming the barriers that prevent them from enjoying their fundamental rights and fulfilling their duties. For when individuals and communities are free to participate fully in public life and offer their contribution, “it is possible to build peaceful coexistence, in which the different cultures and traditions protect their respective values, not by adopting a closed or opposing attitude, but through dialogue and integration” (Address of Pope Francis to Participants in the Pilgrimage of Roma People, 26 October 2015). In this way, the good of all in society is preserved and promoted, and those most marginalized are able to share in the full life of the community. With these sentiments, Pope Francis offers the assurances of his prayerful good wishes, and he invokes upon those gathered the abundant divine blessing of peace and strength.
